My Little Hong Kong – Bewilderment – Mobile Softee

2021

Chinese mineral pigment on rice paper

50W x 50H cm

Angel’s art is inspired by traditional Chinese culture, contemporary art and daily objects. An expert in the meticulous detailed brushstrokes technique, she suggests an innovative and current way of reinterpreting the traditional Chinese style and art form, generating new meaning from within.

Antique blue-and-white china patterns, Kraak porcelain inspired — a type of Chinese export porcelain from the Ming Dynasty for export to Europe, featuring iconic vignettes depicting life of Hong Kong.

A series of work by Angel is full of humour and joy, expressing her wish for the audience to overcome the changes and difficulties we are facing now with a positive attitude, as well as to bring hope to everyone in 2021.

Swimming in Blue and White Series

2019-2020

Colour on shikishi cardboard & Preiser figures

20.5W x 20.5H cm

The blue-and-white patterns in this series come from the porcelain pieces that were discovered and excavated in 2005 from an Ancient Chinese merchant ship named Wanjiao One (Chinese: 碗礁一號, Wanjiao yihao) in Fujian Province. These pieces and their trajectories, which said a lot about what happened in the past, inspired me to create this collection of works.

In this collection, the blue-and-white patterns, consistent with many of the porcelain pieces that were found intact, remain identical to the original. Each piece of painting, which itself tells a unique story, is framed independently, with a navy-blue background that depicts the sea.
